Today was a great day for fishing, a little breezy but we cleaned up today. We hit Lake Newport about 10:15 and by 10:45 Scooter had already had 2 channel cats 6-7" in size, and a 10" small mouth bass. I was reeling them in also, it must have been a spawning bed for the catfish, they were all coming up with big bellies. About 12:15 I decided to take a lunch break so I put my pole between my legs to take a bite out of my sandwhich and guess what I got.... WAAHOOOOOO, a nice 13" large mouth bass hit my line sending my pole somewhere that was ment, well I'll leave it at that and let you use your imagination.... The fish were slowing down a little between 1:00 and 2:00 but we spotted a nice size snapping turtle, Scooter wanted to catch it just for the thrill of the fight but I was glad to see it swim off.
We continued to fish for a few more hours catching more pregnant catfish and I was surprised to reel in the grand daddy of all blue gill, this blue gill was so old he was beginning to change colors from the vibrant blues and yellows to a pale pink. His body size measured out at 8 1/2", he was sweet but a little too slow but I had a heart and sent him back to his family.... We wound down around 4:00 and I was determined to take "Chief Waahooo" with me so I put him down into an old potato chip bag and we headed towards home. I decided to share my wealth on the way home so we took a ride over to Lake Glacier where we found a bunch of folks fishing of the dock, as I was headed over to orphan my fish I wiped out and killed poor "Chief Waahoo" so I had to give him a proper lake burial before heading home to clean up my bloody hand and knee. Whew, what a day but I can't wait to head back out to try our luck with some more and hopefully catch even a bigger "Chief Waahoo" only this time I think I'll hold onto my pole.......
