Today was a most interesting and adventurous day on the lake. We got to Newport around 10:00 and for the first 45 min
we were getting just small nibbles. We had a visitor and his dog come down and after that it was rockin'. I had to take a
second look at the pup, she looked just like our golden retriever Butch. She came and sat down beside me and I pet her for
just a bit. The gentleman and the dog were out for a walk and she wanted to come see what was going on, as the man started
walking away the dog decided to go into the water and sat down on my fishing line, got herself a drink and then headed back
up to the path for thier daily walk. Right after that I caught my first nice size fish. I broke out the shrimp and put a nice
fat worm on my line with a coating of my "Bite Me" bait attractant. It was a nice battle between me and my catfish but I was
able to bring it in, it measured out at 12", too small for me so Scooter and I got our daily fishtale pic and I let it go.
Scooter wasn't doing too well, he would get hit but he could not latch onto get them in. My second fish surely gave me a Wahooo
moment. I sat on my pole to grab a bite to eat, wouldn't you know it, when you open it they will come, the fish I guess were
into gourmet today. I landed the biggest blue gill I have ever caught, it measured out at a little over 9", a true fish Ohio
award winner but I didn't realize it until after I released it and looked into our fishing regulations. I would have had my
first Fish Ohio Pin if I would have kept it, oh well at least I have some great pictures of my buddy. The third fish once
again was another nice catfish, I was rockin out with the Wolf 93.3 and I guess this guy was into the Rolling Stones,
but hey he got his Satisfaction after I got my picture for Fish Tales and let it go. Our friend the dog came
back, she was walking up on the upper path from where we were fishing but when she saw Scooter she just sat down and would
not continue to walk with her owner, she wanted to come back down with us so they both walked down. Once again she sat down
beside me while me and the elder gentleman chatted about fishing and when he was ready to go she walked over to Scooter to
say goodbye and they walked off. Scooter finally got on the train and started using the same bait as me and reeled in
a few nice fish himself, guess our little dog friend was good luck. Scooter latched onto a nice 15" carp we named Rocky
Balboa, just before I snapped the picture Scooter took a left fin to the jaw, it was quite comical at the time. Scooter let
him go, altogether we ended up with 8 fish for the day. The funniest thing we saw was a duck fight between two mallards, a
female we named Daisy and a male we named Donald. Daisy swam around over in the cove for a good half hour before Donald
came back, she was really reading him the right act all you could hear is her sqawking at Donald as to say "where the heck
were you, I've been floating here for quite some time and now you decided to come back." They both flew off up the way where
two other male mallards joined them. A few moments later Donald and Daisy flew back and landed back in front of us and once
again all you could hear was Daisy going off on Donald, it went on for a good 20 min. It put me in mind of my grandpa and
grandma back in the day. We had great time laughing and jamming, 7 hrs passed by and it was time to head home with some
great memories of some well spent quality time together.
